India is the 2nd largest Aluminium producer, 3rd largest lime producer and 4th largest iron ore producer in the world.
Incorporated in 1958 as a Government of India fully owned public enterprise, National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. Since inception, it has been involved in the exploration of wide range of minerals including iron ore, copper, rock phosphate, limestone, dolomite, gypsum, bentonite, magnesite, diamond, tin, tungsten, graphite, beach sands etc. NMDC is India's single largest iron ore producer, producing about 40 MT of iron ore from four fully mechanised mines (Bailadila Deposit-14/11C, Bailadila Deposit-5, 10/11A (Chhattisgarh State), Donimalai Iron Ore Mine and Kumaraswamy Iron Ore Mine (Karnataka State)). Other than Iron Ore, NMDC is the only organised producer of diamond in India from its Majhgawan mine at Panna, Madhya Pradesh. The company has been categorised by the Department of Public Enterprises as "NAVRATNA" Public Sector Enterprise in 2008.
NMDC’s Q3 9 M ended FY26 profit stood at Rs. 5,371.15 crore (US$ 615.2 million).

On January 2, 2026, NMDC Limited reported strong operational performance for December 2025, with iron ore production rising 14.64% year-on-year to 5.40 million tonnes and sales increasing 18.67% to 6.64 million tonnes. For the April–December FY26 period, cumulative production reached 36.89 million tonnes while sales stood at 34.92 million tonnes, reflecting robust demand and improved operational efficiency supporting India’s steel sector. |

On November 1, 2025, Abu Dhabi-based NMDC Dredging & Marine (part of NMDC Group) announced plans to explore an equity stake in the Subarnarekha Port project in Odisha, led by Tata Steel. The move aims to revive the long-delayed deep-water port project, with NMDC also considering undertaking EPC works including dredging and construction. The project, originally awarded in 2008 and valued at around Rs. 12,000–13,000 crore (US$ 1.33–1.45 billion), is gaining traction after years of delays and could significantly boost logistics infrastructure for steel and bulk cargo. Bastar is set to transform with Rs. 52,000 crore (US$ 6.07 billion) in public and private investment, including Rs. 43,000 crore (US$ 5.02 billion) from NMDC, plus major rail and road works, a 350-bed hospital, and over 2,100 jobs through projects in healthcare, agriculture, and MSMEs. NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer, kicked off FY26 on a strong note with record-breaking performance in April 2025. The company produced 4.00 million tonnes (MT) of iron ore and sold 3.63 MT-its highest-ever April volumes since inception. This marks a 15% jump in production and a 2.8% rise in sales compared to the same period last year. |

NMDC, India’s premier producer of iron ore and other minerals, was recently honoured for its outstanding contributions to corporate excellence and social responsibility at the 14th Public relations council of India (PRCI) excellence awards 2024. NMDC achieved its highest ever cumulative volumes up to February 2024, with 40.24 million tonnes of iron ore produced and 40.48 million tonnes sold in the first 11 months of FY24. |

In November 2023, NMDC commenced gold mining operations at Mt Celia in Western Australia through its subsidiary company Legacy Iron Ore Limited. National Miner NMDC flagged off the country's first of its kind Mobile Environment Lab from its Head Office in Hyderabad on October 27, 2023. On September 25, 2023, NMDC was conferred with the ‘'Best Organisation Award’ at the 37th Annual Chapter Convention on Quality Concepts 2023 in Hyderabad. NMDC produced 3.41 million tonnes and sold 3.54 million tonnes of iron ore in the month of August 2023. NMDC unveiled its new logo in August 2023 in New Delhi, showcasing the CPSE's dedication to responsible mining. In July 2023, NMDC launched its Customer Portal - Darpan at its Head office. In July 2023, NMDC won the ‘Mineral Development Award’ and the ‘Employer Brand of the Year Award’ at ASSOCHAM Business Excellence Awards 2023 in Kolkata. In June 2023, NMDC entered into a Collaborative Research Agreement with CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT). In May 2023, Mr. Vinay Kumar assumed office of Director (Technical) at NMDC. He has been appointed as a Functional Director on the board of NMDC, a Navratna company under the Ministry of Steel. NMDC, reported a production of 3.51 MT and sale of 3.43 MT in April 2023, recording the best ever performance for any April month in NMDC history. In February 2023, NMDC signed an agreement for collaborative research with CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar on “Feasibility Studies for Preparation of Fused Magnesia from Kimberlite Tailings” at its Head Office in Hyderabad. |

In September 2021, NMDC collaborated with the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) for research and development projects. In August 2021, NMDC offered technical and financial assistance to Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) to resume mining operations in Odisha. Cumulative production and sales figures until May 2021 stood at 5.91 MT and 6.39 MT, respectively, achieving 45% more production and 63% more sales over the corresponding period in the last year. In December 2020, the long pending issue of Donimalai Iron ore mine (ML No.2396) of NMDC Ltd, which was suspended since November 2018, has finally concluded through the endeavour of the Government. Donimalai Iron ore mine, which has total concession area of 597.54 hectare and estimated resource of 149 MT shall increase the annual Iron ore production in the country by 7 MTPA. The operationalization of the mine would contribute a total of around Rs. 1,100 crore (~US$ 149 million) to the State exchequer per annum. In August 2020, the Board of Directors of NMDC Limited approved the demerger of its upcoming three million tonne per annum capacity steel plant in Chhattisgarh.
