Introduction
Madhya Pradesh, often called the heart of India, sits right at the centre of the country. It’s surrounded by Uttar Pradesh to the north, Chhattisgarh to the east, Maharashtra to the south, and both Gujarat and Rajasthan to the west. Over the years, the state has been growing rapidly, not just in numbers, but in opportunities, infrastructure, and investment, making it one of India’s most promising and dynamic regions today.
As of FY26, Madhya Pradesh's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at current prices stood at Rs. 16,94,477 crore (US$ 192.14 billion), reflecting the state's robust economic momentum. Between FY16 and FY25, the GSDP grew at an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.09% in rupee terms. In FY24, the state’s per capita GSDP reached Rs. 1,56,381 (US$ 1,875.07), marking a steady rise with a CAGR of 10.91% from FY16 to FY24. These figures underscore Madhya Pradesh’s consistent economic progress and improving income levels over the past decade.
Madhya Pradesh is rich in natural resources - fuel, minerals, agriculture, and biodiversity. It is also the only diamond producing state in the country.
Exports from the state stood at Rs. 50865.607 crore (US$ 5821.7 Million) in FY26. The top export commodities of Madhya Pradesh in FY 2025-26 were Drugs and Pharmaceuticals valued at Rs. 9,606.30 crore (US$ 1,099.68 million).
According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), cumulative FDI inflow in Madhya Pradesh was valued at Rs. 5,361.28 crore (US$ 692.98 million) between October 2019 to March 2026.
Indore and Bhopal airports are the busiest in the state. In FY26, aircraft movements at Indore airport reached 33,856, while passenger traffic stood at 4.24 million. During the same period, Bhopal airport recorded 14,567 aircraft movements and handled 1.58 million passengers.
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Madhya Pradesh had 81.92 million wireless subscribers and 2.15 million wireline subscribers, as of June 2025.
Madhya Pradesh Tourism
At Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart 2025 in Bhopal, investments worth Rs. 3,665 crore (US$ 415.58 million) were announced across tourism sectors including luxury resorts and eco-tourism, with participation from 27 countries. The state boasts a diverse array of attractions, from the majestic Khajuraho Temples, renowned for their exquisite erotic sculptures, to the serene Marble Rocks of Bhedaghat and the picturesque Pachmarhi, a hill station in the Satpura Range. Madhya Pradesh's rich cultural heritage is showcased in the historic cities of Ujjain, Gwalior, and Indore, each with their own unique architectural marvels and vibrant markets. The state's wildlife sanctuaries, such as Kanha and Bandhavgarh National Parks, are home to a thriving population of tigers, providing an unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts.
Agriculture in Madhya Pradesh
The horticulture sector has emerged as a key driver of agricultural growth. During the period from 2023–24 to 2024–25, the area under horticultural crops increased from 27.29 lakh hectares to 28.39 lakh hectares, while production rose from 409.30 lakh metric tonnes to 425.68 lakh metric tonnes. Additionally, Rs. 1,299 crore (US$ 144.33 million) has been allocated for the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. Madhya Pradesh recorded strong growth in the livestock, dairy and fisheries sectors in FY 2024-25. Milk production increased by 5.95% to 225.95 lakh tonnes, while meat production rose by 9.86% to 154.41 thousand tonnes. The fisheries sector also performed strongly, with 99% of the water area developed. Fish production reached 4.45 lakh tonnes, while fish seed production stood at 21,776.68 lakh standard fry during FY 2024-25.
Madhya Pradesh is a leading producer of various crops, including wheat, soybean, and pulses, and has a strong presence in the production of cash crops such as cotton and oilseeds. The state's extensive network of irrigation facilities, coupled with its fertile land and favorable climatic conditions, have contributed to the growth and resilience of the agricultural sector, making Madhya Pradesh a key player in India's food security.
Under the State Budget FY 2026-27, allocation for Agriculture and Allied Activities increased to Rs. 23,576 crore (US$ 2.62 billion), reflecting an 8% rise over the revised estimate of Rs. 21,785 crore (US$ 2.42 billion) in FY 2025-26.
Madhya Pradesh has allocated 4.6% of its total expenditure towards irrigation, which is higher than the average expenditure on irrigation by states in 2024-25 (3.4%).
In FY25, exports of cotton yarn stood at Rs. 8,415 crore (US$ 956.49 million).
Recent Developments in Key Sectors
Under the State Budget FY27
- Under the Madhya Pradesh State Budget FY 2026-27, the state allocated 13.7% of its total expenditure towards education, 6.2% towards health, 6.1% towards rural development and 6.1% towards agriculture. Allocation towards energy stood at 8.2%, while water supply and sanitation accounted for 1.7% of the total expenditure.
- The FY 2026-27 Budget also emphasised industrial and infrastructure development. Industrial parks are proposed across the state, while a telecom manufacturing zone is being established in Gwalior. The Indore-Pithampur Economic Corridor is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,360 crore (US$ 262.22 million).
- To strengthen urban infrastructure, the state launched the Dwarka Scheme with a planned expenditure of Rs. 5,000 crore (US$ 555.56 million) over the next three years.
- The government also announced the state’s first Social Impact Bond, proposed to be listed on the National Stock Exchange, to encourage private investment in the social sector.
- In the technology sector, Madhya Pradesh plans to implement the Madhya Pradesh Space Tech Policy 2026 to strengthen the state’s presence in the space and advanced technology ecosystem.
- The Madhya Pradesh government has launched the Drone Promotion and Utilization Policy 2025 to enhance drone manufacturing and applications in sectors like agriculture, logistics, security, and governance. This policy includes incentives such as a 40% capital investment subsidy, up to Rs. 30 crore (US$ 3.4 million) for new investments, and a 25% subsidy on lease rents for three years.
- Madhya Pradesh's electronic manufacturing sector is rapidly expanding, with two approved clusters and 85 companies, while the government trains 20,000 engineers under the Future Skills Programme.
- PNC Infratech has secured a new hybrid annuity highway project from the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) with a bid project cost of Rs. 1,174 crore (US$ 140.73 million). The announcement was made on December 18, 2023, when PNC was declared the lowest bidder (L1) for the project.
- The Union Cabinet has approved the Rs. 18,036 crore (US$ 2.16 billion) Manmad-Indore railway line project, spanning 309 km, to enhance connectivity in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, benefiting industrial zones, agricultural areas, and tribal regions, while facilitating access to religious sites and promoting economic integration over an estimated eight-year construction period
- Madhya Pradesh is set to get two new airports in Guna and Shivpuri, with each airport receiving a funding allocation of Rs. 45 crore (US$ 5.40 million) from the government, which is expected to enhance regional connectivity and boost tourism, trade, and economic activities in the region.
- In 2024, Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and MSMEs laid the foundation stones for developing 15 highway projects worth Rs. 8,038 crore (US$ 963 million) in Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh continues to strengthen its position as a fast growing and opportunity rich state, supported by rising investments, expanding infrastructure and steady economic performance. Strong agriculture, growing manufacturing capabilities, improving connectivity through new expressways, airports and rail links, and rapid growth in tourism and electronics are helping diversify the state’s economic base.
