India’s automobile sector reported strong sales performance in May 2026, reflecting sustained domestic demand and positive momentum across passenger vehicles, utility vehicles and commercial vehicles. Maruti Suzuki India achieved its highest-ever monthly sales volume, selling 2,42,688 units, including a record 1,93,535 units in domestic sales and 41,914 units in exports. Hyundai Motor India recorded total sales of 61,137 units, comprising 47,837 domestic units and 13,300 export units, while domestic sales during the first two months of FY27 rose 13% year-on-year to 99,739 units. The strong performance highlights resilient consumer demand and growing preference for personal mobility solutions. Industry participants attributed the growth to improving economic conditions, rising rural demand and continued interest in feature-rich passenger vehicles. Mahindra & Mahindra reported overall auto sales of 99,636 vehicles, including exports, registering 20% growth over the previous year. The company’s utility vehicle sales reached 58,021 units in the domestic market, while its farm equipment business recorded 23% growth, with domestic tractor sales rising to 47,845 units. Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported sales of 33,128 units, reflecting 7% growth year-on-year, supported by strong demand for hybrid and utility vehicle models. The company also crossed a significant milestone of three lakh Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicle (SHEV) sales in India, highlighting growing consumer acceptance of cleaner mobility solutions.
