  • June 4, 2026

India and South Africa have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in future technologies, with artificial intelligence (AI), Digital Infrastructure and Advanced Manufacturing emerging as key priorities for the next phase of engagement. During discussions between Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh and South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. Nomalungelo Gina, both sides emphasised the need to move beyond traditional research cooperation towards innovation-driven partnerships capable of delivering large-scale economic and societal benefits. The talks highlighted the complementary strengths of the two countries in developing affordable, scalable and inclusive technological solutions for the Global South. India’s growing capabilities in AI, Quantum Technologies, Cyber-Physical Systems, Digital Public Infrastructure and startup-led innovation were identified as important areas for collaboration. The leaders also underlined the significance of platforms such as BRICS, IBSA, G20 and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) in advancing cooperation on science, technology and innovation while supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to intensify collaboration in Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, Geospatial Technologies and Digital Infrastructure, with both countries agreeing to accelerate interactions among scientists, research institutions and technical experts to translate these focus areas into concrete programmes. The discussions also highlighted opportunities in biotechnology, genomics, vaccine development, health technologies, renewable energy, hydrogen technologies and skills development. South Africa expressed interest in expanding institutional linkages and innovation partnerships with India, building on nearly 150 co-funded research projects undertaken jointly across multiple scientific disciplines. The two sides also reviewed progress in astronomy cooperation, including the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, and discussed strengthening engagement through upcoming international platforms such as the BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation Ministerial Meeting and the Science Forum South Africa 2026. The engagement concluded with a shared commitment to building a future-ready innovation partnership driven by research excellence, technology development, startup collaboration and scientific exchanges, aimed at generating long-term benefits for both nations and the broader Global South.
