Kerala is one of the few states to have marketed its natural beauty successfully to the leisure tourism sector. The state's unique heritage and cultural diversity have attracted tourists from around the world. BBC Travel survey has rated Kerala as the top favourite tourist destination among foreign travellers in 2018.
Kerala ranks second in the Investment Climate Index followed by Karnataka as per policy research working paper by the World Bank. The state stands second due to its world-class infrastructure and well-trained human resource pool. Kerala's traditional industries include handloom, cashew, coir, and handicrafts.
At current prices, Kerala’s total GSDP is estimated at Rs. 14.3 lakh crore (US$ 167.3 billion) in FY26. The state’s GSDP recorded a CAGR of 8.84% between FY16 and FY26E.
As of March 31, 2026, Kerala had a total installed power generation capacity of 8,005.84 MW, of which 2,385.02 MW was accounted for by state utilities, 2,581.10 MW by central utilities, and 3,039.72 MW by the private sector. Thermal power contributed 3,069.56 MW to the total installed capacity, followed by renewable energy at 2,566.13 MW, hydropower at 2,008.15 MW, and nuclear energy at 362.00 MW
According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), cumulative Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows in Kerala were valued at Rs. 14,163 crore (US$ 1.75 billion) between October 2019-March 2026.
Exports from the state stood at Rs. 41,868 crore (US$ 4.76 billion) in FY26. Kerala exported two key items including Engineering Goods and Marine Products in FY26.
The following are some of the major initiatives taken by the Government to promote Kerala as an investment destination:
- On January 21, 2026, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Kerala positioned itself as a future-ready investment hub, highlighting policy stability, digital governance, and a skilled workforce while engaging global industry leaders to attract investments and strengthen international economic partnerships.
- On November 30, 2025, Kerala Chief Minister Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan met senior UAE ministers in Dubai to strengthen economic ties and attract investments, positioning Kerala as a key investment destination ahead of the Invest Kerala Global Summit 2026.
- On October 25, 2025, Indian Railways launched the Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express to enhance connectivity between Kerala and Karnataka and promote faster regional travel.
- On September 13, 2025, the Government of Kerala has unveiled a new 25-year urban development policy following the Kerala Urban Conclave 2025 in Kochi with 300 actionable recommendations focused on making cities liveable, equitable and climate-resilient.
- On May 21, 2025, Kerala launched four projects worth Rs. 1,211 crore (US$ 136 million) after the Invest Kerala Global Summit, including ventures by Joy Alukkas Group, Dynamated Technologies, Positive Chip Boards and MS Wood Alliance Park to boost industrial growth.
- On February 21, 2025, at the Invest Kerala Global Summit 2025 in Kochi, Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari announced 31 new road-infrastructure projects in Kerala totaling Rs. 50,000 crore (US$ 5.63 billion) covering 896 km, as part of broader plans to complete road works worth Rs. 3,00,000 crore (US$ 33.8 billion).
- In State Budget FY27, the government increased the outlay for agriculture and allied sectors to Rs. 2,071.95 crore ((US$ 220.94 million), including Rs. 100 crore (US$ 10.65 million) for the World Bank-assisted KERA project, enhanced support for paddy procurement, vegetable cultivation, coconut development, and high-tech farming.
- In State Budget FY27, the government announced a Blue Economy initiative to strengthen marine industries, attract private investments, and build a strong marine ecosystem, with Rs. 10 crore (US$ 1.07 million) allocated for preliminary activities.
- In State Budget FY27, the government allocated Rs. 318.46 crore (US$ 33.92 million) for animal husbandry, focusing on dairy expansion, poultry development, modern slaughterhouses, and attracting large-scale private investments.
- In State Budget FY27, the government expanded healthcare coverage through Medisep 2.0, a new health insurance scheme for families outside KASP, cashless treatment for road accident victims, and enhanced support for critical illness patients.
- In State Budget FY27, the government allocated support for artisans through subsidies for modern tools and promoted eco-friendly pottery manufacturing to modernise traditional industries.
- In State Budget FY27, the government highlighted investment commitments worth Rs. 1.18 lakh crore (US$ 12.57 billion) secured during the World Economic Forum at Davos across medical technology, renewable energy, data centres, and emerging technologies.
- Cargo traffic handled by the Cochin port stood at 3,80,62,547 tonnes in FY26 (April-March 2026).
- In July 2024, the Ministry of Rural Development has approved the construction of 33 roads spanning 159.86 km in Kerala under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-III (PMGSY-III), aiming to enhance rural connectivity and boost economic growth. The project involves an estimated investment of Rs. 160.56 crore (US$ 19.3 million).
- Cargo traffic handled by the Cochin port stood at 35,255 thousand tonnes in FY23.
- In FY23, the total marine products exports from Kerala accounted for US$ 1 billion.
- In FY23, the state’s passenger traffic stood at 8,812,531 at Cochin airport and 3,478,067 at Thiruvananthapuram airport.
- Under the State Budget 2023-24, the government allocated Rs. 2,404 crore (US$ 293.3 million) for roads and bridges.
- In the State Budget 2023-24, the government allocated funds worth Rs. 1,856 crore (US$ 226.4 million) for urban development projects in Kerala, out of which Rs. 455 crore (US$ 55.5 million) has been allocated towards Smart Cities Mission.
- In May 2023, during an investor's meet, 24 of the 121 investors forwarded their letters of interest for an investment of Rs. 381.75 crore (US$ 46.6 million) in various sectors of the Kattakada constituency of Kerala.
- Union Railway Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, in April 2023, informed that 34 railway stations in Kerala would soon be upgraded to world-class standards.
- The State Government of Kerala is planning to formulate a comprehensive urban policy based on the latest studies in urbanization, as proposed in the State Budget 2023-24. For this purpose, a commission will be constituted including international experts and institutions.
- The Union Government gave sanction for works worth Rs. 2,500 crore (US$ 305 million) in the second phase of AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) projects in Kerala.
- Kerala Chief Minister Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan in April 2023 said that the State would be transformed into a healthcare hub by providing better medical services and tourism opportunities in the sector. He said the government would take advantage of the area by exploring the global potential in the healthcare sector. The amount of Rs. 30 crore (US$ 3.7 million) has been allocated for the initial work to formulate and implement the "care policy" and prepare facilities for the same.
- Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for India's first Digital Science Park in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram district on April 25, 2023, marking a milestone in Kerala's transformation into a knowledge economy. The third-generation Science Park will come up close to the Digital University of Kerala at Technopark Phase IV - Technocity in the state capital.
Kerala remains a steadily growing and socially advanced state, supported by strong tourism, a skilled workforce and rising export activity. Continued investments in roads, urban development, healthcare, education and IT are strengthening its business environment and improving connectivity across regions. Targeted support for fisheries, rubber, spices and green energy is also widening economic opportunities. With a stable services driven economy and a clear focus on sustainability and quality of life, Kerala is well placed to attract new investments and maintain balanced, long-term growth.
