Mizoram is one of the seven states in the northeast. Mizoram shares its borders with other northeast states like Manipur, Tripura, and Assam as well as with neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

At current prices, Mizoram’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is estimated at Rs. 39,526.42 crore (US$ 4.47 billion) in 2025–26 (RE) and is projected to increase to Rs. 43,817.09 crore (US$ 4.87 billion) in 2026–27 (BE), registering a growth of 10.85%. The state’s GSDP (in Rs.) increased at a CAGR of 10.14% between 2015-16 and 202-27.

At current prices, the net state domestic product (NSDP) of Mizoram reached Rs. 336.5 billion (US$ 3.99 billion) in 2024-25. The state’s NSDP (in Rs.) increased at a CAGR of 10.60% between 2015-16 and 2024-25.

In FY26, the total merchandise exports from the state stood at Rs. 11.36 crore (US$ 1.319 million).

Mizoram's key export items include spices, cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups and handloom products, leather and leather manufactures, and engineering goods. Spices accounted for 85.9% of the state's total exports.

As of March 31, 2026, Mizoram had an installed power generation capacity of 279.01 MW, comprising 91.51 MW of thermal power, 108.34 MW of hydro power and 79.16 MW of renewable energy capacity.

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Mizoram had 1.45 million wireless subscribers and 0.05 million wireline subscribers, as of March 2026.

Mizoram had a total tele-density of 117.48%, as of March 2026.

In FY26, the Lengpui (Aizawl) Airport in Mizoram recorded 1221.1 metric tonnes in freight, along with the movement of 4,28,701 passengers, and 4,154 aircraft.

The state has a large forest area and contributes 14% to the country’s bamboo production. The climatic conditions in the state provide a breeding ground for commercial exploitation of all kinds of silkworms.

Zoram Industrial Development Corporation (ZIDCO) is responsible for the overall development of industrial infrastructure in the state. Mizoram has eight industrial estates, of which five are operational and the remaining are yet to be developed.

The following are some of the major initiatives taken by the government to promote Mizoram as an investment destination:

• The state government allotted Rs. 909 crore (US$ 101.00 million) for Health & Family Welfare under its annual budget 2026-27.
• Under the State Budget 2026-27, the government allocated Rs. 2,283 crore (US$ 253.67 million) to the Education, Sports, Arts and Culture sector.
• In the State Budget 2026-27, the government allocated Rs. 1,003 crore (US$ 111.44 million) for the Energy sector.
• Under the State Budget 2026-27, the government allocated Rs. 235 crore (US$ 26.11 million) to the Bana Kaih Hand Holding Scheme to support beneficiaries in agriculture and allied activities.
• The Bana Kaih Hand Holding Scheme provides financial support to individuals engaged in agriculture and allied sectors, with an allocation of Rs. 235 crore (US$ 26.11 million) in 2026-27.
• The economy of over 70% of the population in Mizoram is based on farming, Jhuming/shifting cultivation being the mainstay of majority of the farmers. Of the total 21 lakh hectare of land in Mizoram, 11.56 lakh hectare potential cultivable land for horticultural crop is available. Out of the 11.56 lakh hectare potential cultivable land, 1.50 lakh hectare have been covered under plantation of various horticulture crops.
• The 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang broad-gauge railway, built by Indian Railways at a cost of over Rs. 8,000 crore (US$ 916.49 million), was inaugurated by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, giving Aizawl its first direct rail connection to the national network.
• In December 2025, Sairang Railway Station received Mizoram's first rail-carried consignment of 119 automobiles, highlighting the growing utilisation of the Bairabi-Sairang railway corridor for freight transportation and logistics development in the state.
• An amount of Rs. 43.25 crore (US$ 4.81 million) has been allocated to the State Road Fund Board under the Public Works Department (PWD) in 2026-27 for road infrastructure development and maintenance.
• Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurated infrastructure and connectivity projects worth around Rs. 9,000 crore (US$ 1.03 billion) in Mizoram, including the state’s first railway line and a liquefied petroleum gas plant, describing the north‑east as a “growth engine” for India.
• The state launched urgent repair and strengthening works on the critical NH-306 and NH-06 corridors, which connect Mizoram with Assam and the rest of India. NHIDCL committed Rs. 50 crore (US$ 5.56 million), while the state government contributed Rs. 1 crore (US$ 0.11 million) towards the project.
• The Chief Minister of Mizoram inaugurated Thenzawl Peace City on September 1, 2025, a 108 sq. km. planned township for 10 lakh residents, with Rs. 10 crore (US$ 1.16 million) approved for its master plan.
• The government allocated Rs. 408 crore (US$ 45.33 million) towards Urban Development in the State Budget 2026-27.
• Under the State Budget FY25, the government allocated Rs. 2,374 crore (US$ 288.46 million) to the education, sports and art & culture sectors.
• Under the recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission for 2026-31, Mizoram has been allocated Rs. 377 crore (US$ 41.89 million) for Urban Local Bodies to support urban governance and infrastructure development.
• Total horticulture production in Mizoram was 707.97 thousand metric tonnes as per third advance estimates for 2023-24. In FY24, the state produced 346.07 thousand tonnes of fruits under an area of 68.88 thousand hectares. Similarly, 101.21 thousand tonnes of spices were produced in the state under an area of 27.82 thousand hectares in FY24.
• Under the State Budget 2026-27, the government allocated Rs. 2,283 crore (US$ 253.67 million) to the Education, Sports, Arts and Culture sector. Of this, Rs. 584 crore (US$ 64.89 million) has been allocated towards Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan., Rs. 63,456.54 lakh (US$ 76.78 million) for health & family welfare, Rs. 7,214.66 lakh (US$ 8.73 million) to the industry and minerals sectors, Rs. 79,301.33 lakh (US$ 95.96 million) for agriculture & allied activities, and Rs. 1,134.16 lakh (US$ 1.37 million) to the tourism sector.
• National Bamboo Development Agency has set up 8 bamboo handicraft clusters, 11 bamboo furniture clusters, 3 bamboo agarbatti clusters and 5 other bamboo clusters, to date, under the cluster development programme in the state.
• During 2023-24, bamboo generated revenue of Rs. 30.19 lakh from the sale of 12.09 lakh bamboo culms under Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP) activities in Mizoram.
• Under the National Bamboo Mission (NBM), Mizoram received financial assistance of Rs. 87.50 lakh (US$ 0.10 million) from the Government of India and Rs. 9.72 lakh (US$ 0.01 million) under the State Matching Share (SMS) to support bamboo plantation, value addition, processing infrastructure and market development initiatives.
• The railway project of the Bhairabi-Sairang route is estimated to be completed by the end of March 2023. Mizoram will get connected with the main rail lines through the 52 km Sairang - Bhairabi rail line, crossing through 23 tunnels, 36 major and 147 minor bridges.
• Under the National Bamboo Mission (NBM), Mizoram received financial assistance of Rs. 87.50 lakh (US$ 0.10 million) from the Government of India and Rs. 9.72 lakh (US$ 0.01 million) under the State Matching Share (SMS) to support bamboo plantation, value addition, processing infrastructure and market development initiatives.
